Within the Buckeye Hills of Ohio, large deposits of coal were discovered. The Cleveland and Cincinnati Railroad saw a business opportunity with the large deposits of coal found. Within the year 1918, the railroad began construction of a small branch line that would lead the railroad to the coal deposits. A small mine was built after the branch had been completed. The line began exporting coal on March 20th, 1922. Due to having to traverse the Buckeye hills, there were many steep grades along the branch, which required the line to be run by multiple Shays. The mine turned a profit until the early 1950s when the coal deposits eventually dried up which led to the closure of the mine and the branch. Today, the branch remains abandoned and parts of the line have since been removed.
